Spinalonga 1969
A watercolor painted in 1969 while I was living on the southeast shoreline of Crete, Greece, in the small village of Plaka. The subject is the small island of Spinalonga, a former Venetian fortress built to protect mainland Crete from Turkish incursions. Many years later, it became a leper colony, which was abandoned in 1957, and subsequently developed into a red-light district.
At the time I painted this work, Spinalonga was simply a compelling curiosity—a place to swim out to (about a 30-minute swim with jet fins), wander through overgrown vegetation and weathered architecture, and let the imagination reconstruct its layered past. I have not researched its current status in depth, though I would not be surprised if it has since been restored and transformed into a tourist destination.
Archival Prints – Signed Limited Editions
Archival prints are offered as signed, limited editions of 80 per image.
All prints are museum-quality, produced on Epson Velvet Fine Art Paper (100% cotton rag, 19 mil) with Epson UltraChrome archival pigment inks. They are signed by Charles Broderson, printed locally, and protected in clear gel envelopes with foam board backing.
When properly framed under glass, these prints are rated to last approximately 100–200 years, depending on factors such as exposure to UV light, humidity, and environmental pollutants.
Print Sizes & Borders
Print sizes vary by image. White borders typically range from approximately 1–2+ inches, and both image area and border width may vary according to the specific artwork and paper dimensions.
